Come and train with the Australian Senior Women's team coach
Dan Higgins the Gippsland Sports Academy Head Coach has arranged to bring Mark Barnard the Australian Senior Women's Volleyball Coach to Gippsland on Wednesday 25 June at Lowanna College - Newark Avenue, Newborough.
Mark is also a coach at Oregon State University in the USA, so you may like to ask about playing College volleyball.
This is a great opportunity primarily for all female athletes in the Gippsland region from 12 - 18 years of age to meet Mark and gain an understanding of what his philosophy is for our national team and to have a question and answer session at the end of the training.
Athletes do not have to be State or National level, just come along, enjoy the training experience and meet Mark.
The session will begin at 7.00 pm and conclude at 9.30 pm. There is no cost to attend the session.
It would be appreciated if you would publicise this opportunity on your websites and Facebook pages and forward an email to all relevant female athletes in your clubs and associations.

Where: Lavalla College, St. Paul's Campus Champagnat Centre Grey St., Monday evenings, time for men’s program session 7.45 – 9.15pm Generally it is expected that all athletes arrive earlier than 7.45 & have done their pre warm up, e.g. run & stretch or a theraband session & are ready to get straight into drills straight away at 7.45. When doing your warm up please try to keep out of the way of those in the prior training session.
For: All male players are welcome to attend to improve their volleyball but must understand that this session is designed to prepare players to play competitive representative volleyball. Locally based LV squad players who are currently training with LV Hawks & Eastside Hawks will be attending when possible.
Why & What: The first two sessions Mondays 17th & 24th of March will serve as a trial for any players to be added to the LV D1 squad or be recommended for the LV D2 squad for either VVL (held at State Volleyball Centre Dandenong on Saturdays) &/or this year’s Country Championships, CC’14 - June 7, 8, 9 in Leongatha.
Players not selected for either of these two squads would still be welcome to continue training and if they wish participate in CC’14 by forming a LV Community Competition team that may play under the banner of LV Moe CVC or LV Morwell CVC, etc that will be facilitated.
Coaches: A range of experienced coaches will be available, depending on work commitments; however LV D1 coach Jacob Gruis will attend the first two sessions & approximately every second session. GSA coach Anthony Young has accepted responsibility for the overall conduct of the training sessions and will be one of the LV D2 coaches, supported by Greg Wiggins & other LV legends! We currently stringing a third net up between the two main courts, in theory giving us 2 & ½ courts to use. This is something you need to be aware of during warm up with the women’s squads needing both areas to train on as there are many players. The main issue is balls rolling into each other’s court space, something to be vigilant on.
Cost: The cost of the training sessions are $3.00 per night per person payable in an upfront charge of $30 for the next 10 weeks; each person please place the cash in an envelope with the name on it required by start of session 2, March 24 at the latest.
We expect good numbers of Div 1 & Div 2 men in the anticipation of productive training sessions leading up to this year’s country champs where we hope to enter at least 3 teams.

Volleyball Australia Junior Women’s Development Program conducted the annual ‘Churchill Training Camp’ based in Chruchill, LaTrobe Valley, Victoria from December 13 – 19, 2013.
This camp is the first official activity for the 1998/99 National Youth Girl’s Squad (for athletes born in 1998 or 1999) and involves 54 athletes and 16 coaches from around Australia.
This week long National Training Camp is designed to continue the skill development, understanding of the ‘International game’ and further develop the systems used by our National Teams during international competition. While also exposing many athletes to their first taste of Beach Volleyball training – as a mechanism for developing ‘complete’ volleyballers that can compete in either discipline of our sport.
Athletes attending this camp will be considered for selection to further National Program camps and possible international competitions scheduled in 2014 and beyond.
The camp started with a Beach Volleyball weekend at Inverloch beach 1-hour drive from Churchill. Olympian Lou Bawden helped coach the girls and the ‘Ryan family’ set up the Beach Volleyball venue.
We greatly respect and acknowledge where our athletes commence their Volleyball experience and have therefore introduced a ‘where did you come from’ day at which athletes wear the playing top of their state or club. This initiative contributes to maintaining a culture that is strong in our sport.
Volleyball Australia would like to thank the Phoenix Volleyball Club, Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association, Latrobe City Council, and in particular Danny Anderson for hosting again this year with such hospitality.

Latrobe Valley will be represented by teams in all 4 divisions of the Victorian Country Championships be contested in Geelong at the Coria Leisuretime Centre over June 8, 9 & 10. Team details can be found on the Representative Squads pages. The D1 men will be defending their title won in Warrnambool last year, this will be a tough fight against traditional rivals Bendigo & Horsham in a very strong division. A new look WD1 team with some experienced players returning supported by emerging stars will test an open contest, given that perennial champions Bendigo failed to enter this year. A number of developing juniors feature in the two D2 teams. Best of Luck to all and thanks to the coaches & managers.
