HISTORICAL COMPETITIONS PRE 2017

In 2017 Latrobe Valley Volleyball decided to restructure and consolidate the three existing competitions at the Latrobe Leisure Churchill stadium. The recent history of these competitions follows & will be updated as time permits.

Maffra Community Competition

In 2012 Anthony Young brought some Maffra student volleyballers to the Gippsland Regional School Finals where they performed well and went on to the Victorian finals. Soon Maffra players were travelling to Latrobe Valley to train with the Phoenix club, play in Moe and selected in the Gippsland Sports Academy SP AusNet Volleyball program.  The number of juniors and adults from Maffra playing volleyball in LV quickly grew and in 2013 discussions about re-establishing the Maffra Association began in earnest. LVVI agreed that the best way was for LVVI to auspice the Maffra Community Competition under LVVI's constitution and support the fledgling competition until it could become autonomous. This resulted in some of the Maffra players, juniors and parents, choosing to only play in Maffra and impacted on the Moe junior competition for the 2014 Winter season while the Maffra competition began with 6 junior and 4 open teams.

2014 Competition

Maffra players can play locally at Maffra Secondary College (juniors Monday, open Wednesday evenings) and also travel to Latrobe Valley to play in the competitions there.

For 2014 all Maffra players should register with Volleyball Victoria via the Latrobe Valley Association link.  All players must select the LV player levy and the appropriate VVI registration level.  The LV player levy for all local players will be passed to Maffra CVC to assist the Maffra Competition with its costs.

   Morwell Community Volleyball Competition

Morwell is a unique competition in the Valley in that it hosts 2 seperate competions, one for men and one for women. Historically Morwell was the hub of volleyball in the Latrobe Valley and was the home of superclubs Warriors , Poachers, Ubangi & Ulysii, just to name a few. It was also the starting place for many local volleyball legends including the late Ted Kalkhoven. It is also the only Community Competition in the Latrobe Valley to have won 2 Division 2 Women's Country Champs titles, one in 2003 and backed up with a second title in 2004.

More recently the Men's team won the 2009 & 2010 & 2011 Gippsland Regional League finals against long time rivals Bairnsdale. Competition is every Wednesday night from 7:00pm to 9:00pm and anyone interested in playing can go to the "contact us" page and follow the information provided and a season draw can be viewed in the downloads section of the site. In 2013 the remaining teams decided to recombine to form a mixed team competition.

Grand Final MVP -  Andrew Burgess (Tapuras 2)

Season MVP - Jacob Gruis (Lightning)

The final was played in a great spirit and showcased how much the competition has grown in quality over the previous season. In a match that saw the two Tapuras club teams against each other for the second time in 3 seasons. Both teams had a good mix of youth and experience and all sets were tight with both teams taking the lead several times but neither able to get a clean lead. The game was set to be one for the highlight reel as 2010 LV State League MVP Andrew Burgess went head to head with tall 2010 LV Most Improved, Harley Atcheson. It seemed as if every attack was a struggle just to cross the net as block after block from both teams ignited the crowd. Both teams had their share of success as the first 4 sets saw Tapuras 2 up 2-2 and took a 5th set to decide the champions. Congratulations to Tapuras 2 on a great win.  Noted players for Tapuras 1 were Gareth Williams, Harley Atcheson and for Tapuras 2 Andrew Burgess and LVVI legend Tom Dinsmore were best on court.

Thanks to Jacob Gruis and his team (Lightning) on doing a great duty for the match.

 Season 2 Womens

Grand final winners Lightning

Runners upPims 2

Grand Final MVP Callie Cook (Lightning)

Season MVP -  Ash Vuillermin (Pims 2)

This seasons grand final saw last seasons premiers Lightning take on the last seasons runners up Pims 2 in a rematch that promised much. Lightning looking to take the title for the 3rd straight time and Pims looking for payback after last season. Much of the talent of Latrobe Valley Women's Volleyball was represented in this game as no less than seven 2010 squad players including several award winners played in the match. Pims came out hard and showed their experience taking an early lead and securing the first set. Unfortunately for them they couldn't keep the pace as Lightning kicked into another gear and took the next 3 sets to claim the title yet again. Noted players for Pims were two time season MVP Ash Vuillermin and veterans Robyn Bartley and Mary Morgan. Stand outs for Lightning were two time grand final MVP Callie Cook , Jade Henry & Nicole Monks.

Thanks to Dianne Bosma-Lindgren and her team (Trouble) on doing a great duty for the match.

* 2010 Competition *

Season 1 Mens

Grand final winners Lightning

Runners up - Tapuras 2

Grand Final MVP  Andrew Burgess (Tapuras 2)

Season MVP Jacob Gruis ( Lightning )

After Lightning and Tapuras 2 both making the grand final this season the atmosphere was electric as the players warmed up before the first serve. These two teams had four very close games this season and this match was to be no different. With last season's grand final MVP Andrew Burgess in form and the return of Lightning's Jacob Lindgren it was all about the big kills. Each team managed to take two sets of hard hitting and desperate volleyball before they played off in a final thrilling 5th set. After a early charge Lightning almost gave up a 5 point lead as Tapuras 2 managed to put up some heavy blocks against a taller lightning team pulling back 4 points straight to make it 13-14. Lightning then steadied the ship and a well struck metre ball from outside hitter Jacob Lindgren over the top of middle blocker Ben Gruis's chook attempt was enough to finish the game with Lightning taking home the glassware. Congratulations to Lightning on a great win.

Thanks to Howard Williams and his team (Tapuras 1) on doing a great duty for the match.

Season 1 Womens

Grand final winners Lightning

Runners upPims 2

Season MVP -  Ash Vuillermin (Pims 2)

Grand Final MVP Callie Cook (Lightning)

This season's grand final saw last seasons premiers Lightning take on the always improving Pims 2 outfit. The Pims 2 team full of experience and with the 2010 season 1 MVP Ash Vuillermin looking to make an impact the competition favorites Lightining knew they had their work cut out for them. The game seemed to be more of an arm wrestle than predicted with neither team able take 2 sets in a row and despite the hard hits being dished out and the desperate backcourt displayed both teams really kicked into overdrive to set up a sudden death 5th set. Unfortunately the game fitness of the Lightning team let them run away from the Pims in the 5th and they stormed away to finally win by 7 points. A great effort by the Pims 2 team but a big congratulations to Lightning on their 2nd straight premiership win.

Thanks to Dianne Bosma-Lindgren and her team (Trouble) on doing a great duty for the match.

* 2009 Competition *

Season 2 Mens

Grand final winners Tapuras 2

Runners up - Tapuras 1

Season MVP Brett Timms (TNT)

Grand Final MVP  Andrew Burgess (Tapuras 2)

The final was played in a great spirit, in a match that pitted the two Tapuras club teams against each other. Both teams had a good mix of youth and experience and all sets were tight with both teams taking the lead several times but neither able to get a break away. The blocking pressure of Nic Bagshaw and the relentless attack of Andrew Burgess made sure that Tapuras 2 stayed in the game but were unable to continue to dominate play when they took the back court. Fantastic setting by Tapuras 1's Gareth Williams gave young hitter Tom DeVries the opportunity to show off how far his skills have come, putting away some terrific spikes for his team. Finally, in the last set Tapuras 2 came back from 4 points down late in the piece with some desperate , well skilled volleyball and stole the victory. Congratulations to Tapuras 2 on a great win.

Thanks to Jacob Gruis and his team (Lightning) on doing a great duty for the match.

Season 2 Womens

Grand final winners Lightning

Runners up - Trouble

Season MVPCallie Cook (Lightning)

Grand Final MVP Jacqui Howell (Lightning)

The semi final replay saw the season ladders 1st vs 2nd in an old fashioned show down to see who would be crowned No 1 team in the competition. The expectations did not disappoint with a very tough battle between two deserving teams. Trouble took the first set and looked to repeat their semi final win with fierce attacking through Tony Bosma coupled with the stability and leadership of club champion Dianne Bosma-Lindgren. The second set was a turn around from the Lightning camp with smart experienced setting by captain Jade Henry to the well drilled attack of Callie Cook and Sandi Kilpatrick. The rest of the game followed suit with Trouble's attacks unable to penetrate the Lightning defence. Jacqui Howell seemed to rule the net in her new role as middle blocker with some great defensive blocks. Although it was a great game to watch, Lightning's big-game experiance shone through and they picked up the win 3-1. Congratulations to Lightning on their premiership win in their maiden season in the competition.

Thanks to Mary Morgan and her team (Pims 2) on doing a great duty for the match.
